Hi folks,
Lots of fun math today. Today we got into the wonderful world of the mole and stoichiometry. This is one of the tougher mathematical concepts of the year but one of the most important as well. Homework this week will be to do quite a bit more work with these problems. The answers are included so be sure to take your time and discover how to do them. Next week's quiz will be heavy on these so be prepared. Be sure to study the quiz you got back this week. Many folks had some issues on it and those problems will return to haunt you. Beware! :)
Homework due 1/31 is to do problems 5-8 in the enclosed .pdf.
Also, here's a couple of percent composition problems to practice with as well. Email me if you would like the answers to these.
1. What is the percent composition of each element in K2CrO4?
2. What is the percent composition of each element in C3H8?

BBC - Standard Grade Bitesize Games - Elementary : Game
Hi folks,
There's a fun set of quizzes/trivia games here that you may find interesting. It would be a great way to review and get faster with your periodic table.

1/17 Chemistry update and homework due 1/24
Hi folks,
Today we got into balancing equations. This will be a very vital skill as we continue to go forward. We also discussed four different reaction types.
For homework this week, do questions 3-6 on the enclosed worksheet. Also, tell me the types of reactions for all the reactions in questions 3 and 4.
Also, see if you can figure out as many of the products as you can on this grocery list! Good luck with this.

One more change on the answer key
Hi folks,
I trusted the wrong 2 websites when I was checking on the charge of Carbonate. Carbonate is -2, not -3, so the answer for 21 should be AL2(CO3)3.

One more change to the answer key
I got some bad internet data and thought that CO3 was -3. It's -2, so Aluminum Carbonate is AL2(CO3)3.
Updated answer key for homework
Hi folks,
I made a mistake on the first answer key (see, even I can mess this up :) ). This key is correct. I had written BFl3 as an ionic compound. It should be covalent. Boron is a metalloid.

Answer Key for Chemistry Homework
Hi folks,
The answer key for this weeks chemistry homework is the wrong key for some reason. Here is the correct one. Sorry if that gave anyone fits!

1/10 Chemistry update and homework due 1/17
Hi folks,
Today we spent a lot of time on learning how to name molecules. First, we had to learn what the difference is between ionic and covalent bonds and then we had to figure out the various steps to name them. We spent a lot of time working on each step and in the end, I believe, the class had a pretty good handle on it.
Homework this week:
Read Chapter 6 in the text book. Starts on page 173
Do the odd questions in the enclosed .pdf. Answers are included, so that you can check your work and make sure you're on the right track.
There are some polyatomic ions that I didn't have you memorize so I'm listing them here to help you out.
PO3 is Phosphite and is a -3 ion.
Phosphate is PO4 and is also -3
Acetate is C2H3O2 and is a -1 ion.
Cyanide is CN and is -1
I think that's it. Feel free to email if I missed some.
